Have you ever wondered about the history of airships and blimp technology? Or more importantly, how they became one of America’s most popular aerial advertising options?

There is evidence of hot air balloons being used as far back as ancient China. However, they were officially credited as being invented in the late 1700s by two French brothers. Later the same year, a physicist took the first manned balloon flight. While balloons could reach high elevations, they didn’t have the ability to propel themselves and were at the mercy of the wind.

Roughly 70 years after that, Henri Giffard built the first powered airship and in 1900, a German invented the first rigid airship, or Zeppelin, as they were sometimes known. Rigid airships were used for military and civilian purposes, including transatlantic travel. Chances are you’ve heard of the Hindenburg, a well-known Zeppelin that was destroyed by a fire in the late 1930s.

To fund his first airship, British aeronaut Stanley Spencer inked a sponsorship deal with formula manufacturer Mellin and Company. In return for Mellin funding the ship’s construction, Spencer agreed to take 25 flights with an advert for Mellin’s Food emblazoned across the side.

In 1902, Spencer took his creation on a dramatic flight over London, astounding spectators on the ground as he cut sharp turns and circles to demonstrate the ship’s maneuverability. He also tossed rubber balls from the aircraft to display what a militarized airship carrying bombs could achieve.

Taking notice of the increasing popularity of aerial advertising, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company began building blimps, which were used primarily for advertising and military surveillance and anti-submarine warfare throughout WWII. They are now used exclusively for advertising and TV coverage.

The Benefits of Airship Displays:

They fly at a slow speed allowing time for potential customers to easily read your ad copy.

Airships can stay over an event for longer periods than any other form of aerial advertising.

The extended ad placement time leads to better ad recall and increased engagement.

They do not have to refuel as often as airplanes towing banners or doing skytyping.

As the reality of the current global pandemic known as COVID-19 begins to sink in, families everywhere have been faced with cancelling or postponing long-awaited celebrations – weddings, baptisms, graduations, proposals, gender reveals, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons, and more. The emotional and financial impact of changing and delaying these events has been significant and for many, morale is understandably low.

We get it. Our own business has been heavily impacted by the cancellation of some of the biggest events of the year and we’ve heard from customers who are scared and struggling. We have spent the past several days thinking long and hard for ways we can continue to serve you and to find unique and creative ways to continue celebrating life’s special moments. We’ve found endless inspiration on social media and have been touched to see people celebrating birthdays and weddings with “social distancing” car parades. We’ve seen airline banners flown outside hospital windows to bring joy to a loved one coping with illness without the support of visitors. We’ve seen messages of hope flown through the sky over cities where mandatory shelter-in-place orders have been issued.

We realized that while many aspects of “normal” life are on hold, joy still abounds. Babies will still be born. Couples will still fall in love. Students will still graduate. Hope and happiness are not on hold. Your special events may look a little differently this year, but perhaps now more than ever, they deserve to be celebrated with enthusiasm.

If your graduate is disappointed about not getting to walk across the stage, you’re wondering how to safely celebrate mom’s 90th birthday while her nursing home is closed to visitors, or you simply want to remind your neighbors that we’re all in this together – we’re here for you. We’re armed with ideas for honoring occasions big or small and helping you find as much joy as possible in the midst of this crisis.

If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you! With the cost of advertising on television rising and the engagement of people through use of traditional advertising falling, many companies are reconsidering how they want to advertise themselves.

According to the article, one of the many problems facing companies today is advertising is just becoming far too expensive. It costs over $5 million for one Superbowl advertisement alone. A lot of companies simply do not have the funds to spend on that slot of airtime. This gives them even more of a reason to seek out more inexpensive methods to advertise their business.

Another problem facing many businesses is that there has been a dramatic shift in the ability for a lot of advertisements to engage people. Society, as a whole, is getting more desensitized to the same types of companies promising the same types of things. They want to see something new.

The article goes on to mention how some companies have turned to unique ways over the internet to market their businesses, but there exists an even cheaper way to creatively get your message out there for all to see. Take your message and fly it in the sky using an aerial advertising company.

Aerial banner advertising is a long-standing way to market your business, but has lately fallen to the wayside when compared to television and internet ads. However, the power of a strong aerial banner advertising campaign cannot be overlooked. Many companies continue to still use aerial advertising opportunities at a variety of different events as a quick, inexpensive alternative to traditional media.

The easiest difference to spot is the price. While Superbowl commercials cost $5 million for a couple seconds of airtime, the average aerial advertising cost is around $450 per hour in the sky. This is a huge bonus for companies who simply cannot afford the incredible amount of money it takes to put your business on TV.

Another added bonus of hiring an aerial advertising company is the presentation of your message in an original way. Though many people already know what aerial advertising is, it has stayed out of popular media for a while now, leading it to obtain its own level of uniqueness. People will recognize the creativity and effort put forth into placing messages in the sky, rather than online or on TV. This could make them more likely to be interested in checking out your business.

Airplanes have been flying banners in the sky since the early 1920s. These aerial advertising campaigns have flown over beaches, parades, music festivals, and all kinds of events promoting all sorts of products and services. As 2016 came to an end, however, six banners flew across the sky with very different messages.

"AMERICA IS GREAT! TRUMP IS DISGUSTING," read one of the aerial advertising banners that flew across the Pasadena, California sky.

According to CNN, a total of six anti-Trump sky banners were up in the air during the 127th Rose Parade in California. During the parade, as more than 1 million people walked around the streets of Pasadena, the sky was virtually cloud-free, making it very easy for all those eyes to see the anti-Trump ads.

"I've listened to this Donald Trump over the past several months, and I'm the guy that believes you ought to respect the office of President, it doesn't matter who holds it," said Stan Pate, who orchestrated the anti-Trump airplane message campaign. "The idea that you can hate your way to the presidency is disgusting to me. I'm tired of hearing it, he's in the way of us selecting the right person for the job. It's time somebody stood toe-to-toe with him. I'm encouraging people across all of America to get involved and tell Donald Trump exactly who he is and what he is."

Tate, when CNN asked him for proof regarding the sky campaign's funding, was even able pull out the necessary paperwork showing he was the mastermind behind the messaging.

"Skywriting is a huge billboard and it grabs people's attention," Tate added. "There were probably a million people in the street. You can see this thing for 15 miles."

After one of the most polarizing election seasons the country has ever seen, President-elect Donald Trump will officially take office on January 20th during his 2017 inauguration ceremony. If Tate, or anyone who shares the same views and initiatives as he, continues spreading anti-hate, anti-Trump campaigns, there could be plenty of similar messages over the next few weeks, and potentially over the next four years.

As a business owner, you know that your company’s advertising strategy is extremely important. But when it comes to advertising campaigns, too often big businesses either try to get too creative (and it ends up as a total disaster), or those in charge of the advertising just get lazy and allow potentially harmful ads to reach the public.

So while advertising is an essential part of your business’s success, there are so many ways it can go wrong.

Here are a few examples of how advertising mishaps ended up costing companies millions of dollars in lawsuits and a major decrease in brand popularity.

Celeb Boutique’s Twitter Post — Immediately following the Aurora, Colorado shooting, the hashtag, #Aurora began trending on Twitter. Millions of people used the hashtag to mourn for the people of the deadly tragedy, but Celeb Boutique, although unaware of why it was trending, used the hashtag to promote their Aurora dress product. This sparked a major Twitter controversy, with many angry users boycotting the company.

Unfortunately, this is just one of many, many examples of corporate social media profiles using a tragedy to their disadvantage.

Macy’s False Advertising — Another small online mistake that ended up angering many customers was Macy’s notorious necklace debacle. Macy’s tried advertising their usually $1,500 necklace for $479. The only problem: they forgot a digit. The advertisement went out with a listing price of only $47, leading to the necklace selling out immediately. Macy’s had to cancel all the orders and angered many customers in the process.

McDonald’s Billboard Mistake — This advertising mistake shows that even little spelling mistakes can shine a horrible light on your brand. Today, if your company posts one mistake on an ad in the smallest town in America, someone can take a picture of it and share it with the world. That’s kind of what happened with this McDonald’s billboard. Attempting to advertise their “Angus Burger,” they forgot the “g” in angus…

Clearly, simple mistakes made by part-time employees or social media interns , as well as huge mistakes made by big-time advertising executives, can tarnish a company’s brand in a matter of minutes. That’s why it’s extremely important, no matter what size company you are running, that you double, triple and quadruple check your ad before it reaches the public.

One cost-effective form of advertising available to your business is aerial billboards. Airplane banner advertising companies have been flying aerial billboards since the early 1920s and continue to this day. These aerial ads have to be grammatically correct, not offensive, and truthful just like any other form of advertising. But if you’re careful with your aerial advertising, you can reach hundreds of thousands of potential clients at a relatively low cost.

One of the best reasons aerial billboards are so effective is their response rate, which is up to 20% for some aerial ads. In a survey of customers who witnessed these sky advertisements, 79% could remember what was being advertised and 67% could retain at least half of the entire message. Not too many other mediums have enjoyed that much success.

Be careful with your advertising, it can ruin the brand you’ve spent so long building.
The post 3 of the Most Epic Disasters in Modern Advertising History first appeared on Aerial Messages.

Those in charge of their marketing either just don’t think, think way too much and overlook the seemingly obvious badness, or are just completely clueless.

Some companies, however, managed to come up with creative, original, and extremely successful ad campaigns that can change the trajectory of a business forever. Here are a few examples:

Dos Equis — The Most Interesting Man in the World campaign started off in 2007 and is still going strong today. Although the majority of beer commercials in the early 2000s consisted of wild frat boys doing something “funny,” clearly the beer-drinking demographic was looking for someone a little more sophisticated, a little more mysterious, a little more James Bond-like, and a little more… interesting. Stay thirsty, my friends.

ALS Association — Although the ALS Association did not come up with the Ice Bucket Challenge, they certainly enjoyed all the newfound awareness being spread and the more than $15 million earned thanks to the viral videos being shared. Doing something as simple as pouring a freezing cold bucket of ice water over our heads is funny to watch, for a good cause, and… somehow… fun to do.

Kmart — This next one shows how simply one commercial, rather than an entire campaign, can be enough to grow your brand or get back to the level you were once at. Kmart’s “Ship My Pants” campaign was just a little play on words that resulted in more than 22 million YouTube views, 890,000 likes on Facebook, 600,000 shares on Facebook, 400,000 Facebook comments, and a whole bunch of pants purchases.

Apple — Apple’s brilliant, “Get a Mac” ad campaign provided plenty of laughs in 2006 while simultaneously promoting their brand and destroying PC’s. There were more than 65 of these commercials that consisted of only two men in front of a white background, with nothing more than plain clothes and a few easy-to-find props.

Allstate — Allstate’s Mayhem character is one of the greatest characters in television.

It’s up to you to think outside the box and get creative with your advertising campaigns. The ones that are the most successful seem to be quite simple and use comedy or some sort of creativity.

Airplane banners are a great way to start a creative ad campaign because of the price, the response rate — which is nearly 20% for some campaigns — and amount of people that can be reached by one single ad. Airplane banners cost much less money than other forms of advertising — typically $450 an hour — like television and have been flying through the sky since the late 1920s.

If you want to learn more about marketing with airplane banners or any other form of advertising, don’t overthink it, try to be funny, be creative, be original, and most importantly, don’t be offensive.
The post 5 of the Best Advertising Campaigns Over the Last Few Years first appeared on Aerial Messages.

There is so much money inside the advertising industry. For decades, companies have poured millions of dollars into advertising their product or service through various mediums.

At one point in history, print advertising was king. Large corporations spent a significant amount of their budget on print marketing. Shortly after that, radio was the primary form of advertising.

After the radio surge in advertising dollars, TV, Internet, and other media started bringing in all the money. A few mediums tried and failed to join the ranks of top advertising moneymakers. Now, it looks like future of advertising will be full of new and exciting innovations.

However, one form of advertising has remained consistent and successful for more than 100 years.

Airplane Advertising

Plane advertising companies began using this form of marketing in the early 1920s. It has since become a successful way for businesses to market their product.

Aerial ads typically cost about $450 an hour. In comparison to the amount of money companies shove into TV and other advertising mediums, plane advertising is extremely cost effective.

Think about it: if you are trying to successfully advertise your product or service and your company is on a tight budget, only spending $450 for one hour of advertising can potentially increase your profits tremendously. Some U.S. beaches, on a single day, can have more than a million people. Even if your banner ad reaches one-third of that, that’s still more than 300,000 people for only $450.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

It’s too hard to tell what new advertising mediums will claim the advertising throne in the future, but it seems like aerial advertising isn’t going anywhere. If you are looking for cost effective ways to advertise for your company, think about aerial banner advertising.

The advertising industry has seen monumental changes over the last few centuries. At one time, simply being able to share the written word with someone else was kind of a breakthrough. Then one day, a gigantic metal machine flying across the sky blew the minds of millions.

Airplane banners have been being flown since the early 1920s and they have lasted. even through the aughts and all the technological advancements that came with that decade. Plane banners have been effective for years — providing a large advertising reach with a relatively lost cost — but there is a chance that the aerial ad industry is going to use some new innovative technology in the near future.

Along with plane banners, skywriting is another form of aerial advertising. These sky-written messages can be visible for more than 2,800 square miles, and if the weather conditions are ideal, can stay in view for about 20 minutes. Pretty crazy that we have the technology to have a pilot fly an airplane and write messages in the sky.

Thanks to the help of some revolutionary technology, another skywriting service is on the horizon.

Drones
Automated skywriting could be implemented by some aerial advertisers soon, as drones now have the ability to be programmed to use LED lighting tech to write ad messages in the sky. These high-tech messages could last even longer than traditional skywriting.

Drones have been gaining some serious momentum over the last few years. What is now a $137 million industry can expect to reach up to $2.7 billion by 2022. Drones will be everywhere. This drone technology is rapidly changing so many industries: food delivery, law enforcement, and even wedding photography. Many more industries are being affected, but advertisers are surely looking to capitalize on the new drone fad.

“The benefits of digital advertising are spreading to aerial presentations leveraging robotic aerial platforms,” saidSusan Eustis, president and CEO of WinterGreen Research. “Continued growth is assured.”

“The pace of the drone industry,” said Keith Kaplan, CEO of Tesla Foundation, is “moving at light speed and there are no signs of slowing.”
The post New Drone Technology Could Change Ad Industry first appeared on Aerial Messages.
